Character Background and Description Savona Albenga has spent his life by the shore of the Great Lakes. Son of Sam and Fiona Albenga, Savona has fond memories of Mantiowoc, the small city that hugs Lake Michigan, south of Phanes bay. He was a young man when his parents were taken for breeding. He would have gone with them if he hadn't been hunting deer inland. Kept in Mantiowoc to care for his aging grandmother until her death, Savona then left his crumbling hometown for Phanes Bay, in search of work.
Never one for conversation or confrontation, Savona enjoys his job down at the Fox River docks. It's hard labor, but his thick hands and muscular build make easy work of the bins of fish he hauls off boats. He has earned the respect and friendship of the Dockmaster Edgar, an old man who has just enough space in his dry-docked tugboat to accommodate Savona with a bed in the stern. The two men protect each other and preserve Savona unostentatious existence.
Savona leads a quiet life and intends to keep it that way, his job, and simple appearance fit the stereotype of a Barren quite well. He's not one for the new religion or the lifestyle led by the Humans, the thought of it all still leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. Sometimes he lets his mind drift and thinks about finding his parents, they'd be too old for the Breeding Facility and probably set up East Side. He tells himself it's not worth the risk.
